To the editor:
These suggestions might help Big Canoe meet its obligations as a wildlife sanctuary:

In appropriate locations, plant berry bushes for bears. This would reduce bears’ reliance on bird feeders and human garbage, reliance that is currently threatening the lives of a mother bear and three cubs.

Plant soybeans in the spring and rye in the autumn for deer. Perhaps an appropriate location is the large area with paved walkways and dog park. As in the cases of all deer parks, the deer would congregate where the food is, thus sparing the hardwood seedlings and property owners’ ornamentals.

My lot, 1180, and surrounding properties, are good examples of how deer are transforming the character of the forest. Pines comprise a small percentage of the trees; yet, there are only pine seedlings on the property.
