Big Canoe Propane Consortium turns 15 years old

By George Thurman

Fifteen years ago, the Big Canoe Propane Consortium was formed to ensure its members would have the best qualified propane supplier who would provide uninterrupted deliveries at a competitive price. To date, the consortium has been extremely successful meeting its annual objectives.

The following table from the US Energy Administration at EIA.gov indicates the average residential propane pricing for Georgia for October thru April for winters of 2015-2106 and 2016-2017. The Big Canoe Consortium price last year was $1.26, significantly under the average.

Month   2015-2016   2016-2017
October   $1.93   $1.87
November   $1.95   $1.94
December   $2.02   $2.11
January   $2.06   $2.29
February   $2.07   $2.36
March   $2.06   $2.39

The Propane Consortium Management Committee has selected its current provider, Blossman Gas, to continue into the 2017/2018 heating season.

Why Blossman? Under the leadership of Dee Lathem, Blossman has become a “supplier partner” to our community. Not only does Blossman actively support events like golf fund raisers and Hook-a-Kid on Fishing, they also maintain a 120,000 gallon storage facility at the Foothills shopping Center and place a dedicated truck on standby during winter freeze danger periods.

Currently the consortium has over 1,000 members and has enjoyed first rate service and solid pricing from our supplier partner. Blossman has even done several “electric to propane” conversions for members, which has proved to generate documented cost savings. Target pricing for “summer top off fills” should be in the neighborhood of $1.00 (+/-) and will be announced as soon as we are at the low price point. Blossman will top off the “worry free” members; “will call members” will be told the price when they call for service.

If you are already a member of the consortium, we thank you for your support. Rest assured the management committee will continue to work in concert with Blossman to provide the best pricing, service and products. If you have questions or need more information, contact Blossman at (770) 386-6268 or email Dick Scharf at This email address is being protected from spambots.
