Big Canoe celebrates July 4th in a big patriotic way

Big Canoe was the place to be—from sun up to sundown… and beyond—on Tuesday, July 4. Hundreds of residents and guests enjoyed a full day of events and activities capped by a sparkling display of fireworks at night.

The Wildcat Recreation area was the center of the action in the morning when Big Canoe pooches strutted their stuff in patriotic colors. The bike decorating contest came next as kids of all ages showed off their flashy wheels emblazoned with red, white and blue decorations and lots of sparkle.

After a trip or two or three to the bounce house, hungry families visited The Varsity at Big Canoe. As the day warmed up, families gravitated to the community’s coolest places: Big Canoe’s pools and swimming lake.

To reserve a prime spot for the fireworks, people put lawn chairs, towels and blankets on the play field below the dam in the morning. While a midday thunderstorm soaked those early morning towels, it couldn’t dampen the spirits of golfers, hikers, and families enjoying the beaches, events and amenities. All Public Safety personnel were on hand to handle the fireworks, crowds and traffic.

As evening skies darkened, a display of fireworks filled the sky, dazzling viewers with sparkle, flashes of color and drama.

In case you missed anything, here are scenes from the 2017 Big Canoe Fourth of July celebration captured by photographer Jim Francis.
