Margherita autentico pizza is a customer favorite.
Ellijay’s New wood fired pizza restaurant is real Italian
There’s a new pizza restaurant in Ellijay that’s worth driving to no matter where you live in Georgia. Ellijay Wood Fired pizza, located at the corner of River Street and Main Street in downtown Ellijay, opened up in November 2018.
Neopolitan style pizzas are actually wood fired in an oven from Naples, Italy. The pizzas are made with locally sourced ingredients with the crust made from flour shipped from Italy, using ancient cooking methods with modern, all natural flavors for simple food with a modern twist.
The restaurant is “hip and lively” and on a Sunday afternoon in May it was crowded with a short waiting line. At the small bar you can order white or red wine, draft beers that include locally brewed ones like Blue Ridge Helles Lager or Southern Juice, or craft cocktails with names like Ellijay Fizz, Georgia Mule or Cartecay Fleur-de-Lis. The service was attentive and friendly.
Chef/manager Sandy Madewell runs the place. She studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York where she learned from such greats as Master Chef Jacques Pepin, Andre Soltner and Alain Sailhac. She has worked for some of New York’s best according to her bio and catered to some of New York’s finest. She moved to Ellijay from Nashville where she did work as a personal chef for a country singer/songwriter. She has plans to expand the business, perhaps a fresh food marketplace.
The menu at Wood Fired includes salads, small plates, soups and 12-inch red and white pizzas. Customers come from as far away as Atlanta and customer reviews are very good. Among the favorite pizzas are the margherita autentico and the mild sausage & peppadew pepper as well as white pizzas such as the shrimp scampi.
