NGV to host BGEN Dan Cherry at Aug. 10 meeting
By Barbara Balducci
The North Georgia Veterans’ next meeting/luncheon will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10 in the Mountains Grille, Big Canoe clubhouse. The guest speaker will be Brigadier General Dan Cherry, USAF (Ret.) author of “My Enemy, My Friend,” a story of reconciliation of the Vietnam War.
This inspiring book chronicles an intense 1972 dogfight between Cherry’s F-4 Phantom and a North Vietnamese MiG-21 and his subsequent meeting and friendship with the MiG pilot, Nguyen Hong My.
Cherry will be joined by Lt. Col. John Stiles, USAF(Ret.) who was seated in the rear seat of the RF-4C plane shot down by Hong My several months before Cherry’s dogfight with Hong My. You can learn more about their inspiring story on our website at ngvets.org.
Cherry began his career as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. He entered the Air Force in 1959 as an aviation cadet and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1960. His military credentials include flying 295 combat missions during the Vietnam War and shooting down a North Vietnamese MiG-21.
During his Air Force career, he held the positions as Commander and Leader of the Air Force Thunderbirds; Commander of Moody Air Force Base, Georgia; Inspector General of the Pacific Air Forces; Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing flying the F-16 and Commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service.
He completed his service in the Air Force with the rank of Brigadier General and was inducted into the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame in October 2000. Cherry has also served in state government as secretary of the Kentucky Justice Cabinet.
The North Georgia Veterans organization is open to all veterans, anyone who has served in any branch of service, in any capacity, for any period of time. All that is required is an honorable discharge. To attend our meetings/luncheon just register on our website, ngvets.org.
