Big Canoe Fire Department’s firemen are not idle even if we don’t have a fire.

They stay prepared to rescue and extinguish flames.

Photographer Jim Francis caught a regular Thursday training session of firefighters at their training center off Hubbard Road recently. On this day, the scenario was a bedroom fire and rescue.

The training center was constructed from intermodal container units, standardized reusable steel boxes used to store and/or move products. These are the units that move products from ships to rail and to trucks. A burn building, made from the intermodal units, is used to train on fires under heavy smoke conditions. The building has three levels so firefighters learn how to attack at each level. A false roof will be used to practice ventilating roofs to let gasses out safely.

An area to manage propane fires and one for liquids, like diesel fuel, are also there for training. At times an old junk car is placed on site to help train extractions from a wreck.

Having this training center helps Big Canoe maintain and improve the ISO rating for property here. Additionally, other authorized fire departments can use and have used the facility for training purposes.
