Big Canoe Fire Department needs some more volunteers
All the grownup kids in Big Canoe who dreamed of being firemen when they were children haven’t missed that opportunity in life.
The Big Canoe Fire Station in the Village is hosting a Volunteer Firefighter Meet and Greet event Wednesday, April 24 from 6-8 p.m. The primary goal is to get some interior firefighters to supplement the professional Big Canoe firefighters if and when there is a fire in Big Canoe.
“We have a good number of volunteers. However, many of our support and our number of interior firefighters have decreased due to members aging out of interior duty or moving out of the community,” Chief Ricky Jordan said.
There is a place for women too in the volunteers. Sandwiches need to be made and snacks and drinks need to be taken to fire sites for refreshing the firefighters just to name one job. There is a job for every gender.
Refreshments will start the evening off, followed by a station tour, ending in the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) upstairs in the fire house. There a brief history, expectations and requirements to become a Big Canoe Volunteer Firefighter will be discussed.
