Sheriff’s Office investigating possible homicide/suicide

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating an early morning shooting. At 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 a neighbor called the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center to report a shooting at a residence on Crane Road. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies identified the deceased as Stacy Mathews, 53, and Ralph Mathews, 58, both of Dawsonville, according to Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson. Initial investigation appears to indicate a murder/suicide, according to Johnson.

“At this time, we cannot comment on the specifics of the investigation as this is an open and active case,” Johnson said.

“It would [typically]be classified as a domestic violence situation,” Johnson wrote in a statement to Smoke Signals. But there was no history of domestic violence in the past several years and none believed to have directly affected the situation, according to Johnson. The investigation is ongoing.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family and friends during this time,” Johnson said.

Smoke Signals will continue to follow the story.
