Pickens County celebrates paying off community center note
Pickens County celebrated a very rare government event with a special ceremony on Thursday, February 28, at 1329 Camp Road, Jasper. In an official “shredding” ceremony at the Pickens County Community Center, Commission Chair Rob Jones, county officials and local citizens gathered to celebrate paying off the note on the building.
In a surprise move, Pickens County Commissioners and the county attorney renamed the facility the Robert P. Jones Community Center in honor of Jones who has served the county—as sole commissioner and now commission chair—for 16 years.
Chief Financial Officer Faye Harvey said the $3million mortgage was taken out in mid-year 2010 and the county paid $35,000 a month until the note was paid off. “I believe we are the only county without any long-term general fund debt.”
“The community center has been used by thousands of people for so many events and activities from pickleball, yoga and karate to beautiful rental space for private events,” said Lesa Thomason, county clerk.
