Pickens County storm clean up, road paving underway

BY TUCKER GREEN
Pickens County Information Officer

Despite a few weather delays, projects for Pickens County government are full speed ahead. Pickens Public Works cleaned up and chipped 75 downed trees along rights-of-way caused by storms. Additionally, they tarred and graveled a portion of Young Loop and plan to complete the rest of the road once a water line is relocated. Public Works will tar and gravel Mineral Springs Road South and Martin Road in the coming weeks as well as resurface Headstart Road and Smokey Hollow Road.

The county will be resurfacing roads via subcontractor crews in two phases this year: phase one in the summer and phase two in the fall. Johnson Paving was the low bidder and awarded the phase one contract. Phase one consists of 10.36 miles of roads to be resurfaced and should begin in mid to late July.

Phase one includes: Camp Road (from AW Lawson Blvd to Hwy. 53W), Mineral Spring Street, Hobson Road, Parker Road, Keeble Creek, Cagle Road, Bethany Road, Quail Walk, Appalachian Circle, Appalachian Court, and Johnson Road. Paving projects are funded by LMIG (Local Maintenance Improvement Grant) and SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) funds.

Pickens Fire and Rescue is scheduled to officially open Moss Fire Department located off Carlan Road beginning at 10 a.m. on July 25.

During the month of June, Pickens County’s:

  • Department of Planning and Development issued 57 new building permits.
  • Animal shelter brought in 78 animals, and 111 went out through various forms of adoption. Animal control responded to 28 cases.
  • Water department installed 10 new meters. Also, they replaced 560 feet of water line along Henderson Mtn. Rd. with a solid joint fused pipe.
  • 911 operations center received 1,620 total calls, 662 were medical responses or fire related.
  • Recreation department continued to operate summer camp and the county pool. PCRD summer camp averages 70 campers a day.
  • Finance department completed its annual audit and the report was exceptional. The complete audit can be viewed online at pickenscountyga.gov or in person at the Pickens County Administrative Building.

Pickens County government departments continue to stay busy working for the citizens of Pickens County. The Pickens County Board of Commissioners continues to do an excellent job of leading these efforts. As work progresses, and projects continue, I will do my best to keep you informed of these developments.

Until the next time, stay safe, and shop local!
